Amazing Grace and Relationships Essays
Amazing Grace and Relationships Essays Amazing Grace and Relationships Essay Amazing Grace and Relationships Essay The film Amazing Graceââ¬â¢ follows the quest of William (Wilber) Wilberforce to abolish slavery in the UK. He was a member in the House of Commons and his friend William Pitt became the Prime Minister. On Wilberââ¬â¢s endeavour he introduced a bill with the help of Pitt (who was also a strong believer of the movement, which is one of the factors that made them such close friends) and a group of anti-slavery activists which included Equiano, an ex-slave who was of African descent, and Thomas Clarkson, a friend devoted the abolition of slavery.Another on this team was former slave trader turned abolitionist John Newton, he knew what went on behind the scenes with the slavery business and found god and decided against what he had been doing. He wrote the hymn Amazing Graceââ¬â¢ which was a giant inspiration to Wilber, and guided him to spiritual peace with God, and encouraged him to the idea that he could best serve god in the House of Commons. Wilberââ¬â¢s relationship with Newton was special; they had respect for each other on not only a personal but also professional level. The relationship shared between this pair was so strong because of their mutual connection with god, they had both found what they believed in and could understand what each other was going through, as they were both of recognised members of enforcement and were openly Christian. But this anti-slavery bill put forward was abolished with the force of the likes of Lord Tarelton, leader of the pro-slavery head-liners, and the Duke of Clarence, who saw slavery as profitable and as no humanitarian issue.William saw no sense in him and found it utterly inhumane when they were playing cards and the Duke of Clarence put up his African coach drive as a prize, so he stormed off prize-less; undoubtedly this pairââ¬â¢s relationship was poor. After this bill was put down Wilber turned ill and had to leave London for a more relaxing location at a country home of his friends. He got his headspace cleared and re-connected with his lord that had been guiding him to humanitarian success. Here he properly met Barbara Spooner, who he fell in love with, and eventually married and had children with. Barbara had a unique relationship with Wilber, they first met and didnââ¬â¢t hit it off, but then as they began conversing and comparing views they fell deep into conversation and love; even though they did not agree on everything they could freely express their opinion with each other, without fearing that their relationship will break. It was Barbara who was the pushing force behind Wilber to put forward a second bill supporting the abolition of slavery. But before this happened England went to war with France, and this caused a rift in the relationship between Wilber and Pitt, as Pitt was focussed on the war but Wilber saw it beneficial to make peace and stay strong for the movement of anti-slavery rather than causing more trouble and getting too deep into the act of war.During the whole movie, which is about 20 years, this is the only bump in the relationship between these two, and it was resolved very quickly, so this shows that they obviously have a healthy relationship. They can express their opinion, and sometimes it may cause a jolt in their relationship, but this is because they are such highly recognised members of parliament, and they try to stick up for what they believe in but also the view of their each other at the same time, and this can obviously not always be done .The health of the Prime Minister took a turn for the worse and he died, one year before the passing of the anti-slavery bill. Throughout the more than 2 decade journey God was with Wilber the whole way, and was the main relationship in this story. Not only did their relationship grow stronger, but Wilberââ¬â¢s faith also kept him going, even against the opinions on how absurd it was that he believed in a higher power he had never even seen.

The Many Uses of Plastics
The Many Uses of Plastics Most modern plastics are based on organic chemicals that offer manufacturers a huge range of physical properties that is still growing. There was a time when anything made of plastic was considered to be of inferior quality, but those days are past. You are probably wearing plastic right now, maybe a polyester/cotton mix garment or even glasses or a watch with plastic components. The versatility of plastic materials comes from the ability to mold, laminate or shape them and to tailor them physically and chemically. There is a plastic suitable for almost any application. Plastics dont corrode, though they can degrade in UV, a component of sunlight, and can be affected by solvents. PVC plastic, for example, is soluble in acetone. Plastics in the Home There is a huge percentage of plastic in your television, your sound system, your cell phone, and your vacuum cleaner and probably plastic foam in your furniture. What are you walking on? Unless your floor covering is real wood, it probably has a synthetic/natural fiber blend like some of the clothes you wear. Take a look in the kitchen and you might see a plastic chair or bar stool seats, plastic countertops (acrylic composites), plastic linings (PTFE) in your nonstick cooking pans, and plastic plumbing in your water system. Now open your refrigerator. The food might be wrapped in PVC cling film, your yogurt is probably in plastic tubs, cheese in plastic wrap, and water and milk in blow-molded plastic containers. There are plastics now that prevent gas from escaping pressurized soda bottles, but cans and glass are still No. 1 for beer. (For some reason, guys dont like to drink beer from plastic.) When it comes to canned beer, though, you will find that the inside of the can is often lined with a plastic polymer. Plastics in Transport Trains, planes, and automobiles, even ships, satellites, and space stations, use plastics extensively. We used to build ships from wood and planes from string (hemp) and canvas (cotton/flax). We had to work with the materials that nature provided, but no more- we now design our own materials. Whatever mode of transport you pick, youll find plastic used extensively in: SeatingPanelingInstrument enclosuresSurface coverings Plastics are even combined with other materials as structural elements in all kinds of transport, even skateboards, rollerblades, and bicycles. Challenges for the Plastics Industry Its clear that modern life would be very different without plastics. However, challenges lie ahead. Because many plastics are so durable and dont corrode, they create considerable disposal problems. They arent good for the landfill, as many will persist for hundreds of years; when theyre incinerated, dangerous gases can be produced. Many supermarkets now give us one-use grocery bags; leave them in a cupboard long enough and all you will have left is dust because they are engineered to degrade. Perversely, some plastics can be cured (hardened) by UV, which shows how varied their formulas are. Additionally, because many plastics are based ultimately on crude oil, there is a continuous rise in the cost of raw materials that chemical engineers are trying to workaround. We now have biofuel for automobiles, and the feedstock for that fuel grows on the land. As this production increases, sustainable feedstock for the plastic industry will become more widely available. We are getting wiser, and now many plastics can be chemically, mechanically, or thermally recycled. We still must solve the disposal issue, which is being actively addressed through materials research, recycling policies, and enhanced public awareness.

Mankind Distanced From Nature And The Use Of Earth Simply As A Essay
Mankind Distanced From Nature And The Use Of Earth Simply As A Resource - Essay Example Never before have had the benefits of mankind labour threatened their precise existence: also this era of nuclear disasters, arms race, and global warming (Turner, 1980). For the first phase in history, mankind can produce enough to satisfy the needs of every head on the Earth. Despite mankind power to regulate natural world, many societies are dominated by emotions linked to the economic recession, health issues, insecurities, and military chaos (Turner, 1980). These issues overwhelm lives with the seemingly irresistible power of natural disasters. The more densely populated cities become, the more mankindââ¬â¢s lives are recognized by feelings of loneliness and isolation from the nature (Phillips, 2010). The more forces mankind experience to satisfy their emotion, the more they emotionally distance themselves from nature; and this distancing permits them to treat Earth simply as a resource to their needs. This is well discussed in the following paragraphs. The mankind ability to perform their tasks, to develop how they work and build on their successes, has tried to result in cumulative development of the productive forces. From the research carr ied out, one such advancement gave rise to class community. When community became capable of generating surplus, it also made it conceivable for a class to rise, which was liberated from the need, to generate directly and could survive from its control over the work of others (Phillips, 2010). This process was significant in order to establish and direct the productive forces; however, it was also meant that the producers, the majority of the community lost control of their labour. The emergency class society in which one class had power of control over the means of generating what the community required, led to a further division between individuals and the community to which they fit. Some forms of social life caused a wedge between the two dimensions of the self, the person and the communal, producing a separation between peopleââ¬â¢s interests and those of community as a whole (Turner, 1980). Thus, the mankind distanced from nature arose from class community. For instance, Ro bert Romanyshyn use metaphor in is work to elaborate these ideas. He claims that mankind have given their hearts away, a sordid boon (Romanyshyn, 2001). Sordid is the demonstration of the worst aspects of mankind nature such as greed, immorality, and selfishness. On the other hand, Boon is something that works as a blessing or benefit. Complication between the words proposes materialism is corrupt and destructive blessing that the industrial revolution has offered. It emphasised the tension between the good external and the sordid truth behind materialism. On the external, material goods bring pleasure and in many ways are a symbol of mankind progress; however, in truth, they feed the worst feature of humanity (Romanyshyn, 2001). The discipline whose duty is to describe and map the capabilities of human emotions/ mind is psychology; and psychologyââ¬â¢s accepting of these abilities is built around the concept of intelligence. Apart from mankind psychological understanding of how they interact with the world around them, this concept has been widely applied in education and business, where test of intelligence always impacts selection and promotion. More indirectly, a psychological notion about what establishes intelligent action pervades the wider fabric of the community. This impacts common-sense ideas about what institutes mental ability, and offering certain styles of thought and action a higher status than others (Kidner, 1999). At the same time, the
